The nomination of Julie Su to be the next Secretary of Labor continues to be stalled in the Senate.
Su was approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in April. Thirty-three Senate Republicans recently signed onto a letter asking the President to withdraw Su’s nomination to lead the Department of Labor.
Currently serving as the Acting Secretary of Labor, Su is still seeking the support of two Democrats and one independent, namely Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Jon Tester (D-MT) and Independent Kyrsten Synema (I-AZ). Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) is the only Republican Senator still undecided.
Senate Republicans point to Su’s stance on the gig economy and independent contractors as well as her handling of California’s unemployment insurance program, when she was California’s Labor Commissioner, as reasons for their opposition.
